Is the shopping bag ban bad news for garbage chutes?


Coles & Woolworths have banned the traditional plastic shopping bag. Household apartment kitchens are now forced to rethink how to transport their waste to the garbage chute.

As garbage chute cleaners, we are seeing an increase of lose waste inserted into the garbage chute.


Today, we are already seeing an increase in bookings for chute cleaning due to this new behavior of tenant waste disposal.

The trend for some apartment residents, seems to be to place a small container on their kitchen counter and when full, walk it to the waste chute for disposal. Long are the days of lining your kitchen bin with a shopping bag.

As summer approaches, a drastic increase in odours and pests will have buildings building managers and cleaners scrambling for a quick fix.


Typically an apartment building (depending on how many levels there are in the residence), would book a chute clean every 6 or 12 months. Today, we are already seeing an increase in bookings for chute cleaning due to this new behavior of tenant waste disposal.
